RAZER SHOWCASES PROFESSIONAL ESPORTS ATHLETES WITH “TEAM RAZER: GREAT GAMES” DOCUMENTARY
Razer premieres three-part film directed by Travis “Samox” Beauchamp
Razer™, a world leader in connected devices and software for gamers, today announced the first public screening of the upcoming eSports documentary series, “Team Razer: Great Games,” at DreamHack Winter in Jönköping, Sweden.
The trilogy follows members of Team Razer, an elite group of eSports professionals, and focuses on three of today’s most popular eSports titles: StarCraft II, Dota 2 and League of Legends.
Razer’s highly skilled players are revered by millions of people and attract huge in-person and online audiences worldwide, yet their command of complex mechanics, outstanding teamwork, and ability to multi-task at incredible speeds can make it difficult for people unfamiliar with eSports to fully understand and follow the action. Team Razer created the films in an effort to introduce audiences to the finer points of professional gaming, from the games themselves as a sport of the future, to the mega stars, mega audiences and mega revenues.
“When we say eSports is in Razer’s DNA, we really mean it,” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “We pioneered eSports in the early days by supporting budding professional athletes and we helped grow some of the largest tournaments around at the time – we still continue to accomplish that today in a way few others can. With ‘Great Games’ we wanted to showcase the rise of eSports in a way that inveterate and new gamers alike may enjoy, and it provides an exciting glimpse into the lives of some of the world’s most talented eSports professionals that call Team Razer their home.”
The three half-hour episodes were directed by Travis “Samox” Beauchamp, director of the critically acclaimed documentary “The Smash Brothers.” The first installment takes the viewer back to the very beginnings of contemporary eSports, focusing on the formative moments of StarCraft: Brood War, with scene-heroes such as Jaedong and Flash, then turning to StarCraft II and the promising first footsteps of future star, HerO. The following episodes will focus on the world of Massive Online Battle Arena games, providing insight into the meteoric rise of MOBA titles Dota 2 and League of Legends.
"eSports is a phenomenon that so many people are still unaware of, and I want to change that,” says Beauchamp. “Athletes from different cultures pursue their passion with these games, with millions of people watching, each player driven by a desire to be the best of the best. Illuminating the lives of these StarCraft, Dota 2 and League of Legends champions will help eSports novices to understand that ambitious gaming is not only a hobby, but a serious sport."
The documentary features legends from teams such as Team Liquid and Evil Geniuses, providing exclusive insight with interviews and background about an industry that started as a hobby and became one of the most lucrative preoccupations on the planet. All three chapters will be released in sequence on YouTube after the first public screening at DreamHack Winter, Nov. 29.
Razer Presents, Team Razer: Great Games – Episode 1
“GG” (short for “Good Game” or “Great Game”) is the universal signoff for players who know they have been beaten in the toughest arena of modern gaming: eSports. "Great Games" follows three of today’s most popular eSports titles – StarCraft II, Dota 2 and League of Legends – bringing into focus the history and the people of this newest sporting frontier.
Travel back in time to the beginning of eSports in South Korea and to one of the most intense rivalries in the history of StarCraft: Brood War — Jaedong vs. Flash. A culture of intense study and rigorous training gives birth to a fierce environment of competition and innovation. The documentary moves on to StarCraft II and the glimmers of greatness in a new player destined for greatness named HerO.
